White Noise: the identity-free messenger for private, censorship-resistant communication. In a world where every message is tracked, White Noise offers a refuge. Built on the decentralized Nostr network and fortified with cutting-edge MLS encryption, it’s the first messenger that’s truly private, fast, and scalable. No phone numbers, no emails, and no central authority. WHY WHITE NOISE? - Private by design: end-to-end encryption with forward secrecy and post-compromise security. Your messages stay hidden, even if keys leak. - No censorship, ever: thousands of independent relays keep conversations flowing, no matter the pressure. Run your own or use trusted nodes. - Identity freedom: choose anonymity, a pseudonym, or your real name. Your data, your rules. - Scale without limits: from one-on-one chats to groups with thousands, White Noise stays fast, secure, and seamless. - Open source & community-driven: built transparently for trust and security. Everyone can inspect the code, verify claims, and contribute improvements. No backdoors, no corporate control, just a free, open tool for everyone.

    # White Noise Android 2026.10.14 Most of this release is about attachments. Documents and videos can be up to 512 MiB and show progress in bytes while they send. Media tiles also offer Cancel and Retry. Messages can be translated on the phone through the Offline Translator app, which is installed separately. You can also choose swipe actions, add chats to the home screen, give contacts private pictures and set notification overrides per person. The app now uses MarmotKit 0.13.0. ## Media and files - **Larger attachments.** Documents and videos can be up to 512 MiB, with byte progress while they send. Images, replies and forwards keep the 32 MiB limit. Large files send from a private snapshot taken when you attach them, and MarmotKit 0.13.0 streams large attachments directly to disk. ([#3216](https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise-android/pull/3216), [#3221](https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise-android/pull/3221)) - **Transfer controls.** Media tiles show transfer progress with Cancel and Retry, and voice notes keep download progress in their ring. Concurrent transfers group under one count. Automatic downloads back off after Android interrupts them. - **Shared files.** Files shared into White Noise are imported into private, recoverable staging. - **Cards.** VCF attachments show as contact cards, and maps links inside message text show a location card.

    - **Pictures.** You can set a group picture from the image viewer and save your profile QR card to the device gallery. - **Files & Media.** Paging through older items in Files & Media is fixed. ## Messaging - **Translation.** Translate appears in the message menu, and automatic translation can be turned on for all chats or for one chat. Translation runs on the device and requires the Offline Translator app, installed separately. ([#3227](https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise-android/pull/3227)) - **Swipe actions.** Settings → Gestures sets what a swipe does: reply, forward or react on a message; mark read, mute or pin on a chat. - **Pending messages.** Edits to pending messages are kept through sending and delivery. Their actions stay available until delivery completes. - **Smaller fixes.** Group activity rows accept reactions. Copying a poll copies its question and options. Unread-mention jumps stay within the transcript, and custom emoji render in notifications. ## Dictation and read-aloud - **Dictation failures.** If dictation fails, the words it recognized stay in your draft. Nothing is sent until you tap Send. Speech captured before a capture or provider failure is also preserved. - **Read-aloud.** The attachment reader supports seeking and follow-along. Read-aloud queues recover in the background, and voice and read-aloud controls stay available as you move around the app. ## Organization - **Home screen.** Chat details include Add to Home screen, which creates a shortcut tied to that account. A home-screen widget lists an account's chats without showing message text. - **Folders.** The folder editor puts name, chats and filters first. Folders also scroll and sort consistently, and they exclude chats the same way every time. Forward and share destinations can be filtered by a saved folder. - **Search.** Global search keeps its filters and returns you to your previous position. ## Privacy and notifications - **Private contact pictures.** You can set a picture for a contact that stays private to your account. It stays unpublished, and their public profile is unchanged. - **Per-person notifications.** A person's profile sheet holds notification overrides for that person, scoped to the current account. - **Preview privacy.** Notification previews have their own privacy setting, independent of other notification choices. - **Notification taps.** Tapping a notification opens the message it was about. Banners stay readable, and an unfinished reply started from a notification continues in the composer. - **Longer notification text.** Expanded notifications show longer message bodies and no longer stop at the old 200-character chat preview limit. Bodies are still capped by the existing 1000-codepoint safety bound, and your preview privacy settings still apply. - **Readable accents.** Action text and mentions stay readable whichever accent color you choose. ## Recovery - **Invitations and setup.** Invitations can be recovered through discovery, and account setup can be repaired. Invitation failures explain recipient-specific next steps. - **Startup.** Recovery work before the chat list first appears is bounded. Diagnostics can be exported from recovery. - **Chats and groups.** Leaving a chat, creating a group and deleting a chat locally can recover after failures without blind retries.
