The voice recorder for the space age, with Bluetooth and hearing-aid microphones, on-device transcription, White Noise and Android Auto.

Third Ear is a free, open-source voice recorder for Android. Instead of one record button you get your own action buttons: save, copy the transcript, share, post to a webhook or send to a White Noise group. While recording, every button turns into "Stop → action", so the destination can still change when you stop. It records from the phone, Bluetooth headsets, LE Audio hearing aids and the car's hands-free microphone, and shows which microphone really records. Transcription happens on the phone with Offline Speech to Text. Third Ear has its own White Noise identity, so it can talk to your groups and to AI agents in them and read the replies aloud. It also works in Android Auto. Long recordings keep going with the screen off and survive crashes.

    # Third Ear 0.1.7 - **Record from the car screen without Google Play.** Third Ear now shows up in Android Auto as a media app, which Android Auto allows for apps from Zapstore once Unknown sources is on in its developer settings. The Record tab lists your lines: tap one and it records. Now Playing is the recording screen, with pause, ■ stop and save, and ✕ discard. To send the recording somewhere else, tap the back arrow while recording and pick "Stop → line". While a recording runs, the steering wheel's play/pause pauses it and "next" saves it. The Messages tab plays your recent White Noise messages. - **"Play" never starts a recording.** Android Auto resumes the last media app when the car connects, and headphones send "play" too. Only a tap on a line starts a recording. - **Why a media app:** since Android Auto 17.x, car apps built with Google's Car App Library run only when Google Play installed them. The grid version is still in the app, and Android Auto shows it where it is allowed. # Third Ear 0.1.6 - **Leaving a White Noise group works, and says what happened.** Before, a failed leave showed a bare hex code and the group stayed. If Third Ear is an admin, it now gives up admin rights before it leaves. If it is the group's only admin, which is the case for a test group made in Third Ear, you can remove the group from this phone instead. While a leave waits for the group to confirm, the group shows as leaving. Groups you have left stay in the list with a Remove button. A line that still sends to such a group shows a warning. - **Pick the name your White Noise groups see.** Setup → White Noise → Name in groups. "Third Ear (Anna's phone)" says whose it is; plain "Third Ear" looked like a bot. - **Sending a line to a group works on the first try.** When White Noise is off, the line editor turns it on in place, then offers to create a test group and selects it. If you close a new line without saving, the next Add line brings back what you typed. Until you join a group, the key-backup reminder is a plain note, not an orange alarm. - **Webhooks need https://.** Android never let Third Ear send to an http:// address anyway, so such a webhook only failed later, when a recording was sent. The editor now says so up front. A webhook carries your recording and its transcript, so it should be encrypted. # Third Ear 0.1.5 - **Tells you when Offline Speech to Text is missing.** The system speech recognizer (Google, Samsung) cannot transcribe a recording, so with only that installed a transcript came back as "no speech recognised" and nothing explained why. Third Ear now shows a notice on the Board with a link to Offline Speech to Text on Zapstore, and the error says to install it. # Third Ear 0.1.4 - **App shortcuts.** Long-press the Third Ear icon: the first four lines and "Stop recording". A line shortcut works like the widget: tap to record on that line, tap again to stop and send. Drag one to the home screen to keep it there. The menu follows your lines when you add, rename, reorder or delete them. - **Bind a line to a button or an automation.** Launchers, button-mapping and automation apps (Key Mapper, Button Mapper, Tasker and others) list Third Ear's "Record on a line" shortcut. Pick any line, or "Stop recording", which stops and sends on the line the recording started with. Other apps cannot start a recording through these shortcuts: each one carries a key only your install knows. - **A shortcut outlives its line** only as a notice: "This line no longer exists", instead of recording somewhere else. Pinned ones are greyed out. Signing certificate SHA-256: `79750fb49349ec3729be5a3e825507a15e47c6d987e854ae91d5d50a20b3a24d`

    # Third Ear 0.1.3 - **Talk in Messages, not only listen.** An open White Noise group has a text field and a big record key. The recording sends your voice, or only the transcript (a switch above the key). It works for every joined group, also one without a line on the Board, and a note still on its way shows above the field, with Retry when it was not delivered. - **A real player for voice messages.** Each voice message shows its length and waveform. Tap or drag on the waveform to jump, pause, and change the speed from 1× to 2×. Voice messages you sent and older ones play too: they are downloaded when the conversation shows them. - **Playback speed, per group.** Setup has a default speed for voice messages, and each group can have its own (Lines, Groups): an agent that already talks fast stays at 1×, people play at 1.5× or 2×. The speed also applies when messages play by themselves or from the notification. - **Pick any folder for recordings.** The first recording asks where recordings go, and the folder you pick is the folder; a subfolder of Music no longer ends in "Wrong folder selected" ([#7](https://github.com/jooray/third-ear/issues/7)). Setup's Save recordings in works the same way. Installs that granted Music before keep working. - **Tablets and wide screens.** Messages shows the groups and the open conversation side by side. - **Smaller things.** Conversations sit at the bottom by the field and scroll to a new message, the keyboard no longer hides the header, times read like a chat app. In the car, a sender named like its group is said once, and when Android refuses the microphone (Third Ear not opened on the phone since a restart or an update) the car says so instead of "Starting the microphone" forever. • Oct 30, 2026 0.1.2
    # Third Ear 0.1.2 - **One big Stop key while recording.** The line you tapped to start is the plan: it becomes a large "Stop → line" key under the timer, so you no longer look for it among the other lines. Pause is a full-width button below it with room in between. The other lines fold away under "Stop on another line", and Discard sits last, behind a confirmation. - **Know when to speak.** A Bluetooth microphone takes a few seconds to come up. "Listening cue" plays a tone or says "Go ahead" once the microphone really records (always a tone on the phone's own microphone, so the clip doesn't end up in the recording). "After the stop" says what happens next ("Saved, transcribing.") or plays a tone, then a tone when it is delivered or fails. Each can be turned off. Turning off the old "Spoken cues" switch carries over as both off. - **Leave White Noise groups.** Open a group under Lines → Groups and tap Leave group. The others see Third Ear leave, and only a new invite brings it back. - **Next step after an invite.** A joined group without a line says so, with "Make a line" opening the editor already set to send to that group. - **Back up the White Noise key.** Until the nsec of the current identity has been shown once, Lines and Setup remind you that only this phone has it, with a direct way to back it up. - **Messages, like a chat app.** With White Noise on, a Messages tab lists the groups with their newest message (Third Ear's own included) and how many are unread. Open a group to see the conversation, play any voice message (older ones and Third Ear's own are downloaded when you tap Play) or have a text read aloud. "Mark all as read" sits on the list for every group and in an open group for that one; the Board offers it too when more than one group has replies waiting. Without White Noise the tab stays hidden and replies stay under Log. Signing certificate SHA-256: `79750fb49349ec3729be5a3e825507a15e47c6d987e854ae91d5d50a20b3a24d`
  • Oct 29, 2026 0.1.0
    # Third Ear 0.1.0 The first release of Third Ear, a voice recorder for Android 12+ built on Fossify Voice Recorder. - **Action buttons.** Each button records and then saves, copies the transcript, shares, posts to a webhook or sends to a White Noise group. While recording, every button reads "Stop → action", so you can still change your mind when you stop. - **Bluetooth microphones that work.** Headsets, LE Audio hearing aids and the car's hands-free microphone. The app waits for LE Audio to start, shows which microphone really records and lets you switch mid-recording into the same file. It falls back to the phone once, with a cue. With the car and headphones both connected, it uses the headphones' microphone. - **On-device transcription** with [Offline Speech to Text](https://zapstore.dev/apps/app.offlinespeechtotext). It works with the screen locked and waits while the app is busy. Transcripts are saved next to the recording. - **White Noise.** Third Ear has its own identity. It can send voice notes or transcripts to your groups, including groups with AI agents. Replies are played or read aloud, automatically or when you ask. - **Android Auto.** Your actions on the car screen, and messages announced with Reply and Mark as read. See the website for how to enable it. - **Built for long recordings.** It keeps recording with the screen off and the phone locked. A crash loses at most the last second, and the silence watchdog warns when the microphone delivers nothing.
