Your music collection, playable anywhere, without exposing your server to the internet

PearTune plays the music library on a machine you own - an Umbrel, a NAS, an old desktop, a laptop - from anywhere, over a direct encrypted connection between your phone and that machine. No port forwarding, no VPN, no dynamic DNS, no account, and no copy of your library in anyone's cloud. The music never leaves your hardware: it streams through the live connection while it plays. It reads the library you already have. Point it at Navidrome, Jellyfin, Emby or anything else that speaks the Subsonic API and it uses your tags, your artwork and the server's transcoding. Or point it at a plain folder of files and PearTune reads the tags itself - artist, album, track number, year and embedded cover art - so a folder is a real library, not a list of filenames. Someone can let a friend or a family member in, each as their own person with their own devices, their own favourites and their own resume points, and no login to pass around. The owner sees every device on their dashboard and can revoke one, or everything one person holds, in a second - mid-song, not "on next login". Nobody who is let in ever receives a copy of a file. Two things worth stating plainly. First, PearTune needs that machine running the PearTune host - it is the source of the music, so this is not a player for files on your phone. Second, some networks stop a phone and a host connecting directly. When that happens PearTune can fall back to a relay PeerLoom runs, which forwards encrypted data it cannot read and keeps no copy of it. Your phone always tries a direct connection first. When the relay is the only route to a library, PearTune asks before streaming that library's music through it and remembers your answer. Browsing that library goes over the relay without asking, which is a much smaller amount of data and is stated here rather than left for you to assume. One switch in Settings turns the relay off entirely.

    - On Android 13 and newer, the play, pause and skip controls now show up in your notifications and on the lock screen while music is playing. PearTune asks for permission the first time you press play. Lyrics and volume evening need the PearTune server on your library to be updated too. Until it is, those features simply won't appear.

    New Features - Audiobooks. PearTune now plays audiobooks: m4b and m4a files, or books split into mp3 parts. In the dashboard, tick "Audiobooks" next to a folder and those books get their own Books section, with covers. - Audiobookshelf support. If you use Audiobookshelf, add it in the dashboard and its books appear in PearTune next to your music. You can listen to them from anywhere without setting up remote access. - Pick up where you left off. Books remember your place, even near the very end, and a "Continue listening" row takes you straight back. Everyone in your library keeps their own place. - Chapters. While a book plays, skip back 15 seconds or forward 30. The lock screen follows suit, and music stays at 15 either way. - Lock screen matches the app. Lock-screen and headphone skips now move 15 seconds, the same as the buttons in the app. Before, they moved 10. - Player layout. The back and forward buttons now sit at opposite ends of the player's second row. - Long times. Times over an hour now show hours, e.g. 9:43:41. - No shuffle for books.     Fixes - Songs in .ogg format now play on iPhone and iPad. Before, they appeared in your library and tapping one left the player sitting there in silence, with nothing to explain why. - A library served from a Mac, Windows or Linux computer can now play formats your phone does not understand, such as .wma and .ogg. Those tracks used to be silent. There is nothing extra to install - it is built in now. - On a Mac, choosing "Update now" takes effect straight away. The update used to install correctly while your library quietly kept running the old version until you restarted the computer. - The "Recently added row" switch in Settings now gives the same small buzz as the other switches when you tap it.

    ## Getting started 1. Install the host on the machine with your music (macOS, Windows, Linux, Umbrel or Docker). 2. Open the dashboard and point it at your music. 3. Scan the QR code with the app on your phone. That's the setup. ## What you can do **Play your library from anywhere.** Browse by artist, album, genre or track with artwork, search everything, and play with gapless playback, shuffle, repeat and a sleep timer. Audio keeps going in the background and on the lock screen. **Let people in, and cut them off.** Give access per person and per device — your phone, your tablet, a friend. Revoke any one of them without disturbing the others, and it takes effect immediately, even mid-song. Guest passes expire on their own after a time you set, with a countdown shown to the guest, so lending your library for a weekend doesn't depend on you remembering. **Take music with you.** Pin an album to keep it on your phone for a flight or a tunnel. **Pick up where you left off.** Favourites and resume points follow you between your own devices — a track paused on one is where you left it on another. Starting playback on a second device pauses the first rather than playing twice. **Playlists**, both the ones you make on your phone and the read-only ones your server already has. **Ask for music you can't find.** Anyone you've let in can request something, and the owner works through the queue in the app. **More than one library at once.** If you're let into several, they blend into one. **Manage it from your phone.** An owner can see every device, pair a new one and revoke any of them without opening the dashboard. ## Your music, wherever it already lives Point the host at an existing **Navidrome** (or any Subsonic-compatible) server, an existing **Jellyfin** server, or just **a plain folder of music files** — PearTune reads the tags itself, so a folder is a real library with artists, albums, years and cover art, not a list of filenames. ## Staying connected Most of the time your phone talks straight to your host. Some mobile carriers and locked-down wifi refuse a direct connection, and PearTune then falls back to a relay run by PeerLoom. The relay only passes along traffic that's already encrypted — it can see that your device is talking to your host and how much data moves, never what's in it, and it keeps no copy. It's on by default and you can turn it off in **Settings → Connection**. ## Keeping it running On **Linux and Windows**, the host installs as a proper background service: your library keeps serving after you log out, and starts again by itself when the machine reboots. On **macOS** it runs while you're signed in. It also asks for administrator rights, because it sets PearTune up as a background service. ## Good to know - The phone apps aren't in the app stores yet. iOS is with App Review; on Android, install the `.apk` above or get it on Zapstore.dev - On Linux, the `.deb` sets up the background service for you. The AppImage runs when you log in instead — run `peartune-desktop --install-service` once if you'd rather it always run.
