Brunswick Brunswick@stacker.news Private, offline apparent-solar-time clock and true-azimuth instrument.
Solar Dial is a privacy-first Android solar instrument that calculates local apparent solar time, true solar azimuth and elevation, sunrise, solar noon, and sunset entirely on device. Features: - Local apparent solar time with second-level display updates. - Offline NOAA-style solar calculations using true geographic azimuths. - An optional physical horizontal dial registered to true heading when the phone is level and its rotation-vector sensor is usable. - A live home-screen widget with explicit manual, cached, stale, polar, and no-location states. - Foreground GPS only, a manual coordinate option, and a private local cache. - No Internet permission, accounts, analytics, advertising, or telemetry. Physical compass alignment is most reliable away from ferromagnetic objects after calibrating the device. Widget updates are best effort and may be deferred by Android.

- Aug 29, 2026 0.1.0# Solar Dial 0.1.0 ## Release summary Solar Dial is a privacy-first, offline Android solar instrument. It turns the current UTC time and an on-device location into local apparent solar time, true solar azimuth/elevation, sunrise, solar noon, and sunset information. ## Highlights - Local apparent solar time with second-level display updates aligned to calculated apparent-solar-second boundaries. - Offline NOAA-style solar calculations using true geographic azimuths.
- A physical horizontal dial mode that uses the rotation-vector sensor, geomagnetic declination, and a level check to register the dial to true geographic directions. - A fixed-frame fallback when physical registration is unavailable or the phone is not level. - A live home-screen widget with a dynamic daylight arc, local apparent solar time, and explicit manual, cached, stale, polar, and no-location states. - Manual coordinates, foreground GPS only, and a private timestamped local location cache. - No Internet permission, telemetry, analytics, advertising, accounts, or network-backed solar calculation. ## Notes for testers Physical registration is most reliable with the phone face-up, level, away from ferromagnetic objects, and after compass calibration. Widget updates use Android's best-effort inexact scheduling and can be deferred by the operating system.
