Kai is a private AI assistant. Kai does RAG on your Mac. Kai also gives you AI answers when you are away from your desk. There is no sign-up. Your account is an anonymous Nostr key. Your phone makes the key. Only you hold the key. Open the app and ask a question. Type the question, or speak it in a natural conversation. Your chat history is stored on your device. Unsaved chats wash away after 7 days. Answers, generated images and sources awaiting delivery may be held on the server until you receive them or they expire, for no longer than 48 hours. Your RAG data stays on the Mac at your home. PRIVACY - Your External Brain index stays on your Mac. With your consent, reports include the reported answer, its first picture if present and an optional note. Reports are retained for moderation for 90 days. - Your phone can replace supported private data in documents with anonymous placeholders before sending. Contextual name detection is currently English-only and can miss names or redact neighboring words. - Back up your key to recover your account if you lose your phone. Use Wash to clear local conversations. A REAL CONVERSATION - Talk without your hands. Kai listens, answers out loud, and stops when you speak. - Use interpreter mode. Select two languages. Tap the flag under any answer or picture to report it to K.ai. You choose a reason, add a note if you want, and the answer travels with the report so a person can review it. Nothing else from your chat is sent. Kai does not make sexual or nude pictures. This covers new pictures and edits of pictures you already have. When you ask for one, Kai says so in one line and offers to draw something else. Everything else draws as before.

- Aug 30, 2026 1.5.4Kai reads the compact pairing invitation. Some computers have no window to draw a QR code in — a home server, a machine you reach over SSH. Those show their pairing invitation in the terminal instead, and it has to be small enough to fit one. Kai now reads that form, so it can pair with them. Nothing else changes. If you only pair with a Mac, this update does nothing you will notice.
