Bike Radar

Overlay and audio alerts for BLE bike radars. Offline, no account, no cloud.

Bike Radar shows and sounds what your rear bike radar sees, on top of whatever app you are already running. A thin strip down the edge of the screen shows each approaching vehicle's distance, closing speed and lateral position. Tiered beeps rise as the closest vehicle gets nearer, and a distinct urgent tone fires when an impact looks imminent - including while you are rolling slowly toward a junction with a fast vehicle behind. A clear chime sounds when the radar sees nothing left within your alert distance. Everything runs on your phone: no account, no cloud, no analytics. The optional Home Assistant integration publishes ride stats to your own server and nowhere else. Another app on your phone can ask to use your radar, and nothing reaches it until you allow it on a screen naming the app; that handover happens on the device, app to app. Features: - Live overlay with per-vehicle distance, closing speed and lateral position - Tiered proximity beeps, urgent imminent-impact tone, all-clear chime - Post-ride summary notification: overtakes, close passes, distance, tightest pass - Front camera/light auto mode by local sunset (from a rough area, read while the app is open) - Bosch Smart System eBike telemetry, strictly read-only - Walk-away and forgot-to-lock reminders - Optional Home Assistant publishing: batteries, close passes, ride summaries - Sharing with another app on your phone (with your permission): the radar feed, and if you also allow it control of your tail light and hiding the overlay - Optional on-device capture log for diagnostics, off by default and never uploaded - English and Spanish Requires a supported rear radar paired over Bluetooth (pair it once in system Settings) and Android 12 or newer. There is no standard Bluetooth profile for bike radars, so support is per model; the compatibility list on the project's source page says which units work, and the list is short. A radar that reports distance only is expected to get the approach beeps, the all-clear and an overlay coloured by distance; the per-vehicle speed and side readouts, the urgent tone and close-pass counting need one that also reports closing speed and lateral position. The radar, camera and eBike integrations degrade gracefully: each works without the others. Bike Radar is a riding aid, not a safety guarantee. It supplements your own attention and mirrors - it never replaces them. This is an independent open-source project (GPL-3.0-or-later), not affiliated with or endorsed by any radar or eBike manufacturer.

    ### Fixes - **A radar you picked from the paired list shows its own battery.** Before, the home screen, Settings and apps that use your radar could show no battery for it, or another device's. - **With no radar paired, a dashcam no longer counts as your radar.** The home screen and Settings now ask you to pair a radar, and the dashcam's battery no longer shows on the radar row. - With only a dashcam paired, the warning for riding without the radar no longer sounds. - **A radar whose Bluetooth name gives only the brand now shows as not paired until you pick it under Pair on the home screen.** Before, it showed as paired but never connected. - Until you pick it, the warning for riding without the radar stays off. - **With Nearby devices not allowed, setup and the dashcam picker send you to Permissions.** Before, they said nothing was paired and sent you to pair again.

    ### Breaking - **On a ride where close passes weren't counted, the Home Assistant close-pass sensors read Unknown, not 0.** If an automation reads them as 0, check it still does what you want. - That is a ride with close-pass counting off, with a radar that reports distance only, or where the radar never reported your speed. - The sensors are Close passes, Grazing passes, HGV close passes and Close-pass conversion rate (`close_pass_count`, `grazing_count`, `hgv_close_pass_count`, `close_pass_conversion_rate`), and on such a ride these fields are also missing from every ride-summary sensor's attributes. ### Security - **Serial numbers in device names are hidden in more places.** The connection log on the Debug screen and the crash reports you share now hide them too, and more of the shapes a serial number takes are caught. - The connection log and crash reports already on the phone are masked once after installing this version. ### Improvements - **The dashcam picker's buttons are easier to tap, and screen readers announce its rows as choices.** ### Bug reports - The connection log now records what the app sets the radar's tail light to, and whether the radar took it. - The capture log now records each beep held back while you were stopped. - The report you copy for a bug report no longer says a Home Assistant address was tested after you edited it in setup. ### Upgrading - Still works on Android 12 and later. - If your radar shows as not paired after installing this version, pick it under Pair on the home screen. Until you do, the warning for riding without the radar stays off. - Beeps, the urgent warning and the all-clear are unchanged. Nothing else changes in Home Assistant. ### For developers - Android Gradle plugin 9.5.0, Roborazzi 1.77.0, Gradle 9.8.2, actions/setup-java 6.1.0. ## What's Changed * ci: bump actions/setup-java from 6.0.1 to 6.1.0 by @dependabot[bot] in https://github.com/partymola/android-bike-radar-overlay/pull/51 * build: bump the gradle group across 1 directory with 6 updates by @dependabot[bot] in https://github.com/partymola/android-bike-radar-overlay/pull/52 **Full Changelog**: https://github.com/partymola/android-bike-radar-overlay/compare/v1.10.0...v1.11.0
